When we think of visiting South Korea, most of us would know little about where to go outside of the capital city of Seoul. Seoul is an exciting, growing city but it is by no means all that South Korea has to offer. The Korean capital actually only covers less than 1% of the land in the country, leaving a further 99% to be explored. Once you leave the city you’ll have beaches, mountains, historical sights and luscious green landscapes to take in and enjoy.
- Seoraksan National Park in Gangwon is a popular hiking destination. With valleys, mountain tops and waterfalls to explore, you can hike through the various hiking trails designed for different levels of difficulty.
- Busan, Korea’s second city, is well-known for its beaches and seafood. Here you can visit the most famous beach in South Korea – Haeundae Beach, eat fresh seafood at Jagalchi fish market, and visit the magnificent Yonggungsa Temple.
- Just off the coast of South Korea, Jeju Island attracts vacationers by the thousands. Visit Jeju in April to catch fields of rapeseed flowers in bloom. If you can’t catch the rapeseed fields, no worries as there are plenty of other attractions to see such as the Jusangjeolli cliffs, the Cheonjeyeon Falls, and Baengnokdam Lake.
- People who live and work in Seoul often escape the city at weekends and over holidays by travelling the short distance to Ulleungdo Island. This island is famous for its iconic seaside road, parts of which are suspended over the sea itself, rather than being carved into the cliff face. You can walk or cycle along the seaside road easily, but make sure that you factor in enough time to really enjoy the view and to take lots of pictures.
So there you have it, plenty more reasons to visit South Korea than to simply visit the capital.
