Exploring Lucerne Switzerland, a Tourist-Friendly Destination

Located in north-central Switzerland lies Lucerne, a breathtaking city with a long and detailed history dating back to the 6th century. History buffs come to learn of the many tales in the area (such as that of Pontius Pilate being buried at the astute Mount Pilatus); while others pay a visit to the area to enjoy the shores of Lake Lucerne or ski on the Swiss Alps. Much like other communities in the northern portion of Switzerland, the residents of Lucerne primarily speak German, but many are well versed in a number of other languages, making it a tourist-friendly destination.

Teeming with a Rich Past

Anyone who pays a visit to Lucerne can immediately dive into the city’s history and culture. There are an ample number of attractions available that celebrate the city:

The Old Quarter: Located just north of the Reuss River are the ancient cobbled roads of the Old Quarter. As its name suggests, the town is separated into four squares: Kornmarkt, Hirschenplatz, Winmarkt and Mühlenplatz. Visitors can delight in the medieval and colourful architecture of this area and are treated to a stunning array of cascading fountains and other historic landmarks.

The Lion Monument: The dying Lion of Lucerne is one of the world’s most famous monuments. The sculpture commemorates the slaughter of the Swiss Guards during the French Revolution and is described by Mark Twain as the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.

Chapel Bridge: One can’t possibly visit Lucerne and not see the Chapel Bridge. Spanning across the Reuss River, this 204m long wooden covered structure was originally constructed in 1333 and holds the record as being the oldest covered bridge in all of Europe.

An Outdoor Enthusiast’s Dream

Many visit Lucerne to revel in its stunning natural landscape and to partake in one of the many outdoor activities that it has to offer. The previously mentioned Mount Pilatus isn’t only a destination for history buffs, it’s also one of the best hiking spots in all of Europe. With a number of restaurants along the way, travellers can stop and refuel at any point while taking in the breath-taking views of the area. There is also the Pilatus Railway (the highest rack railway in the world) which takes visitors all the way to the summit, though the more extensive Golden Round Trip is certainly worthwhile if you have the time.

Lake Lucerne is another area that beckons numerous visitors to its coves and beaches each year. There are a number of diverse villages located along the shores of this large yet placid lake, each offering a variety of attractions such as:

• Cable Cars: The Titlis is a favourite in this region. This is a unique revolving cable car that takes visitors up to a height of 3032m

Mount Rigi in the Swiss Alps (which can be seen from Lake Lucerne) is also one of the most popular skiing destinations for locals and tourists alike. With 7 ski lifts and an altitude of up to 1725m, it is also one of the highest mountains in the area. Unlike many other regions, Switzerland has fantastic summer ski opportunities open to its visitors, being able to offer year-round skiing and snowboarding.
