A Guide to Perth Attractions

Perth is a large, dynamic and exciting city located on Australia’s west coast. It is particularly popular amongst visitors to Australia due to its unique combination of urban attractions and informal ambience. It is quite sophisticated and high-brow, yet it also has an extremely relaxed feel, making it particularly popular with younger travellers.

If you are only in Perth for a short amount of time then there are some definite must-sees which you have to fit into your itinerary. Freemantle prison is one of these sights which is not to be missed. This institution dates back to Australia’s convict era and still stands in immaculate condition. The prison has been preserved as a museum, offering an insight into what it must have been like to have been an inmate at Freemantle. There are various different tours on offer throughout the day and a night-time torch lit tour which gives all of the gruesome details of the macabre history of the prison to more fearsome visitors. The prisoners who were imprisoned there built a series of underground tunnels underneath the prison and you can take a boat ride through these to look at their handiwork.

The city is built right on the coast, so there are beautiful sandy beaches within walking distance from the city centre. They are well worth a look if you are in the area.

Perth is also home to a number of different galleries and museums. The Art Gallery of Western Australia contains some of the most important post-war collections of works by Australian artists. They also have a large and impressive collection of aboriginal art which is well worth a look. This gallery is also where the entries to the annual WA Indigenous Art Awards are exhibited between the months of August and December.

If you are interested in wildlife, a whale-watching day tour could be the perfect way to spend a day. The boats depart each day from Hillary’s Boat Harbour, and if this is something which you really want to fit in during your time in Perth, then it is probably worth booking your place before you arrive. Humpback whales migrate to areas of the ocean just off the coast of Perth between September and November, so this is the perfect time of year to spot the whales in their natural environment. The harbour is not far at all from the Aquarium of Western Australia where you can spend the rest of your day looking at seals, rays, dolphins and turtles native to the waters around Australia’s coast.
